Unknown assailants have opened fire on a police checkpoint in the Russian North Caucasus republic of Dagestan, injuring a police officer, investigators told RIA Novosti.
“One policeman was wounded late on Sunday in the village of Shauri when a police checkpoint came under fire,” a spokesman for the Investigative Committee said.
An investigation is underway.
More that a decade after the end of a federal war against separatists in the Russian North Caucasus republic of Chechnya, Russian security forces continue to fight militants in other regions in the area, including Dagestan, where attacks on security forces, police and civilians are frequent.
