Temperatures in the Siberian village of Oymyakon, known as the coldest permanently inhabited place on Earth, reached a record high of -25 degrees Celsius (-13 degrees Fahrenheit) on January 16.
“Oymyakon has for the second time this winter lost the status of the coldest place in the Northern Hemisphere,” meteorologists said.
The unusual warm spell was due to a southern cyclone from Japan which surpassed the cold anticyclone in the northeastern Russian region of Yakutia. Temperatures in the northeast and east of the region have been 16-18 degrees higher than the average for mid-January.
