MOSCOW, August 30 (RIA Novosti) - Trilateral gas talks involving Russia, the European Commission and Ukraine will resume in early September, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said Saturday following the talks with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko.

“We will resume trilateral talks on energy in the beginning of September to facilitate the solution of the gas dispute,” Barroso told reporters.

Poroshenko said he believes that the planned negotiations would yield positive results.

Trilateral talks on gas issues took place between April and June to no avail.

On June 16, Russian gas giant Gazprom was forced to implement a prepayment scheme for gas deliveries to Ukraine after several unsuccessful rounds of talks on the new price and debt repayment. Ukraine’s gas debt is estimated to be more than $5.3 billion.

Russia offered Ukraine a $100 gas price discount, bringing the total price down to $385 per 1,000 cubic meters, a lower price it charges any of its European customers. Ukraine refused to negotiate the Russia’s proposed discount, dissatisfied with the discount mechanism.
