Egypt's seeks Gazprom to help with export gas shipments to Europe amid the continuing deficit in the country, Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak said on Saturday.

MOSCOW, April 20 (RIA Novosti) – Egypt's seeks Gazprom to help with export gas shipments to Europe amid the continuing deficit in the country, Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak said on Saturday.

“Egypt has asked us [Russia] to help make swap gas shipments in order under Egypt’s agreements with Europe,” Novak told the Prime news agency on Saturday, adding that Egypt currently experiences difficulties with the export contracts because of the exisitng gas shortages on its domestic market.

According to Novak, Russia’s gas giant Gazprom is now mulling Egypt’s proposal to make swap gas shipments to Europe. The company is expected to announce its decision soon, the minister said.

Last week Gazprom’s CEO Alexey Miller met with Mohamed Kamal Abdel Hamid, Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources in Moscow to discuss bilateral cooperation in oil and gas industries.

On Friday, Egypt’s President Mohamed Mursi had a meeting with President Vladimir Putin in Sochi. Cairo hopes to restore economic ties that Egypt had with the Soviet Union.
