Russian Shipyard Starts Work on Fifth Buyan Corvette

A shipbuilder in Russia's republic of Tatarstan has begun construction of a fifth Project 21631 Buyan-class missile corvette for the Navy, the Zelenodolsk shipyard said on Friday.

KAZAN, January 25 (RIA Novosti) - A shipbuilder in Russia's republic of Tatarstan has begun construction of a fifth Project 21631 Buyan-class missile corvette for the Navy, the Zelenodolsk shipyard said on Friday.

The corvette, a derivative of the earlier Project 21630, will be named Serpukhov.

The Buyan-class is optimized for anti-surface warfare. It is armed with an eight-round launcher for 3M54 Kaliber (SS-N-27) cruise missiles, Igla 1M anti-aircraft missiles, a 100-mm main gun and two 30-mm air-defense guns and is equipped with electronic countermeasures equipment, according to Russian-ships.info.

It has a speed of 25 knots, a range of 1,500 miles and an endurance of 10 days.

The lead ship of this project, the Grad Sviyazhsk, was laid down in August 2010; the second, the Uglich, in July 2011; the third, the Veliky Ustyug, in August 2011; and the fourth, the Zelyony Dol, in August 2012.
