DreamWorks Animation's Puss in Boots 3D broke box-office records for an animation and became the third highest-grossing release ever in Russia and the CIS on an opening weekend, movie business paper Kinobisnes Sevodnya reported.
Puss in Boots 3D made 450 million rubles ($14.8 million) box-office takings last weekend, the third-largest sum ever in Russia and the CIS except Ukraine, local distributor Central Partnership's spokeswoman Marina Grigoryeva said on Tuesday.
The film also broke records in America, grossing $34 million in its first weekend.
The spin-off from popular Shrek franchise made the best start in Russia for original movies and took the third highest ever opening takings after Shrek Forever After, which made 604.1 million rubles ($20.14 million) after its first weekend in 2010, and Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, which collected 512 million rubles ($17.07 million) in 2009.
Puss in Boots collected 40 million rubles ($1.33 million) on its first day in Russia on October 27, an absolute record for a Thursday, Central Partnership said in a statement last week.
