The future of Ukraine’s EU association agreement depends on the country’s judicial standards, Pavel Koval, head of the European Parliament delegation for EU-Ukraine cooperation, said on Friday.
The European Parliament on Thursday passed a resolution assessing the prospects for the signing of an association agreement and criticizing the trial of opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko, saying it was “a judicial abuse which was aimed at suppressing the most important opposition leader in Ukraine.”
Ukraine’s refusal to reconsider Tymoshenko’s case jeopardizes the signing and ratification of an Association Agreement, the resolution said.
“I believe that this threat remains,” Koval said, adding that Ukraine’s democratic system has serious flaws.
The document’s ratification will be contingent on the quality of the electoral process in Ukraine, the level of press freedom and the outcome of the Tymoshenko case, he said.
