A number of large foreign companies have filed bids to participate in the construction of new metro stations in Moscow, the Russian capital's transport department said on Wednesday.

Earlier Moscow authorities said foreign firms could gain contracts to construct metro stations and roads in the city. Mayor Sergei Sobyanin has tasked officials with speeding up construction, with some 53 billion rubles ($2.2bn) allocated for the purpose in 2011. Over 70km (43 miles) of metro lines are to be built by 2015.

"There are many applications from different companies, including Siemens and Hyundai. They are being considered," a spokeswoman for the department said, adding that the company that will build new metro sections will be chosen after a tender.

Siemens official Rolf Epstein told journalists on Wednesday that his company could supply some 100 new Inspiro trains to Moscow.
