Drinks giant PepsiCo has asked permission from Russia's Federal Antimonopoly Service to buy Wimm-Bill-Dann, one of the country's leading dairy producers, the service's deputy head Andrei Tsyganov said on Wednesday.

"Yes, it (the request to buy the company) was received a few days ago," he said.

On December 2, PepsiCo signed an agreement to buy Wimm-Bill-Dann for $5.8 billion. Under the deal, PepsiCo will buy a 66% stake in Wimm-Bill-Dann for $3.8 billion, pending required government approvals, and then will offer to buy remaining shares.

Tsyganov said the issue would be considered by a governmental commission which was likely to meet by the end of the year.
