MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Thousands of people took to streets in Australia to protest against child abuse in Don Dale Detention Centre, local media reported on Saturday.
According to 9news media outlet, communities in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Darwin reacted with rallies after media revealed earlier this week a video footage showing teenage detainee restrained, knocked, stripped naked and kept in solitary confinement by prison guards.
The Don Dale facility became a focus of controversy in 2014, when the tear gas incident occurred several weeks after a number of teenage prisoners attempted an escape and were placed into the prison's isolation wing. Initially it was claimed that tear gas was deployed during a prison riot, while footage revealed on July 25 indicated that only one detainee escaped his cell, while the others remained locked inside theirs.
