MOSCOW, September 30 (RIA Novosti) - The United States is pursuing a policy of perpetual aggression toward Latin America with the end goal of taking the region under its control, US-born investigative journalist Eva Golinger said in Ecuador on Tuesday.

"Whoever is in power – be it Republicans or Democrats – their state policy will continue to be that of dominating this region, which they still regard as their own backyard," Latin America's Prensa Latina news agency quoted Eva Golinger as saying in a statement.

The journalist, who naturalized as a Venezuelan citizen and currently edits the international edition of the Correo del Orinoco, warned that US-led capitalism was still seeking to exploit any vulnerability in the Latin American society to push through its agenda.

Golinger pointed to Bolivia, where conservative forces have been under assault ever since President Evo Morales announced he was going to seek re-election in the general election in late 2014.

Speaking about Ecuador, the journalist praised its transformation progress. She reminded the press of where things stood in the country before the 2007 political and institutional shift and warned that social unhappiness could be used by right-wing movements to target the government.

Latin America has long been working to shed its "US backyard" image, which was perpetuated by the Monroe Doctrine. It was adopted in the 19th century to outline the US foreign policy in Latin American countries. The doctrine stated that any efforts by countries from across the Atlantic to interfere with nations in North or South America would be regarded as acts of aggression and prompt US intervention.
