MOSCOW, September 10 (RIA Novosti) – The Shanghai Group, comprising six member-states, expands the non-American world of which China and Russia are the pillars, the director of the Center for Strategic Issues of Northeast Asia and SCO said on Wednesday.

“SCO indirectly or directly strengthens and expands the non-American world. We are becoming more and more differentiated. China and Russia are the pillars of this non-American world,” said Sergei Luzyanin, the director of the center of the Institute of Far Eastern Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Luzyanin participated Wednesday in the video link-up between Moscow and Beijing organized by the International Information Agency Rossiya Segodnya press center ahead of the SCO summit to be held in Tajikistan’s capital Dushanbe on September 11-12.

Speaking on the Ukrainian crisis, Luzyanin said: “China takes a neutral stance on Ukraine. But the fact the SCO is to make away from the Ukrainian issue, is a fact. The Dushanbe declaration is unlikely to have a chapter on Ukraine, maybe not even a mention.”

Luzyanin said the SCO is unlikely to interfere in Ukraine’s affairs as China, Uzbekistan and other countries hold a neutral position. “We are thankful to China for the Ukrainian neutrality,” he said.

SCO is a Eurasian political, economic and military organization founded in 2001 in Shanghai by the leaders of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Afghanistan, India, Iran, Mongolia and Pakistan are currently observer members.

Beijing has been cementing ties with Moscow amid strained relations between Russia, the EU and the United States over the Ukrainian crisis. China has been a traditional Russian ally on the world stage in recent years.

Moscow and Beijing presented a united front on war-torn Syria, joining forces last year to oppose the US proposal for military intervention there.
