MOSCOW, September 8 (RIA Novosti) -Russia and the United States need to discuss possibilities of achieving a “historic compromise,” the former speechwriter for Mikhail Gorbachev, Viktor Kuvaldin, said on Monday.

“We need to talk about a historic compromise now, a compromise in the relations between the US and Russia,” said Kuvaldin, adding that containing Russia was the US policy since 1985.

“Russia was denied the right that the others had,” Kuvaldin explained.

According to Kuvaldin, the role of the United States in the modern world is “irreplaceable,” however the US leaders need to consider the interests of the other great powers, including Russia.

“[Russia has] special interests, especially in former soviet republics, this is a sensitive issue, and others need to be considerate here, because the reaction can be very harsh,” said Kuvaldin

Relations between Russia and the West have deteriorated in regard to the situation in Ukraine. The West has repeatedly accused Russia of building up forces on its border with eastern Ukraine and supplying independence supporters with weapons, a claim Moscow has rejected.
