LONDON, August 16 (RIA Novosti), Mark Hirst – Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott is being used by the British Government as a propaganda tool in its drive against Scottish independence, international award winning Australian journalist John Pilger told RIA Novosti.

“Like many Australian politicians before him, Tony Abbott is used as a loud-speaker principally by the US, also by Israel, and now by the Cameron government in its propaganda drive against the possibility of Scottish independence,” said Pilger, a two-times winner of the Journalist of the Year Award and fierce critic of Western foreign military interventions.

Pilger’s comments followed an interview the Australian Prime Minister gave The Times newspaper in which he said that “as a friend of Britain, as an observer from afar, it's hard to see how the world would be helped by an independent Scotland.”

“I think that the people who would like to see the break-up of the United Kingdom are not the friends of justice, not the friends of freedom, and that the countries that would cheer at the prospect of the break-up with the United Kingdom are not the countries whose company one would like to keep,” Abbott added.

Pilger, who opposes the continued role of the British monarchy as the head of state in Australia told RIA Novosti Abbott’s views on Scottish independence would be demeaning for many Australians.

“Abbott's is a quintessentially colonial role, that of a vassal, and demeaning for those Australians who wonder when their nation will ever achieve independence,” Pilger said.

There was also criticism of Abbott’s comments from the leader of the Scottish Green Party, Patrick Harvie, a Member of the Scottish Parliament, who told RIA Novosti that Abbott’s “ludicrous comments indicate that he thinks the Yes campaign are a collection of comic book super villains.”

“Australia has prospered as an independent country, able to make decisions for itself. I wonder how many Australians would like to see that reversed,” Harvie added.

“After a Yes vote Scotland will take our place as a valued and respected member of the international community, just as Australia and almost two hundred other independent states do already,” he said.

Scots will vote in a referendum to be held on September 18, and will be asked one question; “Should Scotland become an independent country.”
