MOSCOW, September 17 (RIA Novosti) - Spanish journalist Miguel Bas has been appointed Deputy Head of the Foreign Language News Production and Head of the Spanish News Wire at RIA Novosti.
Miguel Bas was born in the Soviet Union in a family evacuated from Spain during the Spanish Civil War in 1936-1939.
“For me to join RIA Novosti, a major multimedia news agency, is a professional challenge, a great honor and an exciting task. In the 1940s, my grandparents listened to the military front news by Sovinformburo with the anti-German groups,” he said.
Miguel Bas spent a large part of his career in the EFE Spanish news agency where he covered the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the establishment of new Russia. As a military correspondent, he reported on many conflicts in the post-Soviet space.
Bas has headed EFE correspondent offices in Montevideo and Moscow.
His work has won him awards and prizes in Russia and other former Soviet countries.
“Miguel Bas is not the first professional from a high-quality foreign media outlet to join our team in recent years,” Nabi Abdullayev, Head of the Foreign Language News Production, said. “We intend to increase RIA Novosti’s brand recognition abroad. In this we receive tremendous help from my predecessor Christopher Boian, who used to work for AFP, Head of the English News Wire Natalia Yefimova who has worked with The New York Times and The Los Angeles Times, and correspondents and editors previously employed by AP, the BBC and other prominent, respected news organizations.”
