The RIA Novosti Infographics Studio has released an album of its best works which were published on resources of the RIA Novosti Group in 2012. The publication includes over 100 original images with accompanying text in Russian and English.
"This publication can be regarded as a unique encyclopedia of this genre since it covers various aspects of infographics work, from selecting the subject matter and structuring the information to the visual composition and design. Each work included in the publication is a complete modern infographic product which has both an informational-perceptual and a design value. For example, the piece How do we call relatives of the groom and bride after the wedding is a simple, understandable and interestingly presented piece of information with an original composition that will appeal to both schoolchildren and adults alike," said Head of the RIA Novosti Infographics Studio Pavel Shorokh.
He said the album contains both static and dynamic works, although the latter are in abridged versions, without certain features that are impossible to convey in print materials: multi-level navigation, animations, managed 3D objects, sounds, etc. The full versions of these pieces are available on the RIA Novosti website.
"The main idea behind the book is for readers not to simply flick through it and put it on their bookshelf, like they do with similar types of publications, but for them to put their favorite infographics up on the wall, like posters. The format has effectively been duplicated on account of complex pages; the perforation provides access to the individual infographic pieces," said RIA Novosti graphic designer Yekaterina Lupanova, who came up with the unusual design for the album. She said that in order to get away from the diversity of color in the actual infographics displayed in the album, brighter fluorescent shades were chosen for the navigation headings.
"We wanted to reflect the creative process, show the office and the people involved in the production of infographics. That is why this book includes photographs of the space that surrounds us," said RIA Novosti's Art Director and Deputy Editor-in-Chief Ilya Ruderman.
The album also includes photographs which show the workplaces of the designers, artists, 3-D visualizers, programmers, editors and cartographers.
The publication is divided into four sections, each of which has its own color. Green is for infographics designed for the RIA Novosti website. Yellow is for infographics created specially for the Moskovskiye Novosti and The Moscow Newsnewspapers. Orange is for interactive infographics and pink is for infographics created on order for external projects.
Forty-eight people worked on the album, including artists, illustrators, programmers, photographers, editors and many others. Among them, the 19 designers responsible for the album's unique design played a particularly important role.
The RIA Novosti Infographics Studio was opened in 2007. In the space of five years the small group of designers transformed itself into one of the biggest infographics bureaus in Europe. The studio has won various competitions, including the prestigious international contests SND, Malofiej and European Design Awards. The studio has also been shortlisted and longlisted for the Information Is Beautiful competition.
