MOSCOW, February 8 (RIA Novosti) – RIA Novosti has published a Russian translation of Newsonomics: Twelve Trends That Will Shape the News You Get, a book by the prominent US news analyst Ken Doctor. This book opens the agency’s popular science publishing project, The Future Media, dedicated to the modern media and their development.
The author offers his point of view on the short-term prospects for digital and tra-ditional news journalism, which is presented in the form of twelve trends, each discussed in a separate chapter. He describes the difficult situation that exists in the present-day media, which has resulted from the rapid development of the internet and internet technologies that are shaping a new media environment with its new rules of the game and new ways of consuming news content.
“Newsonomics is a term coined by Ken Doctor. Literally it means ‘an economy of news’ but it ought to be seen in a much wider context. This book is about how the media industry operates in a crisis environment, where the old traditions have been swept away and there is nothing new to replace them with,” RIA Novosti Editor-in-Chief Svetlana Mironyuk says in her foreword to the Russian edition.
The author describes the transformation of the news media and their transition to digital and multi-platform technologies, focusing on the emerging business models and new journalism. He gives an account of what has gone and what has come in its place, sharing his concern about evolving viable models of modern journalism. In his opinion, the world is entering a decade of digital news.
The book analyzes and illustrates changes in the US media. Russian companies, primarily media organizations, are going through a similar change, which is why familiarity with some original experience will have particular relevance.
One of the central ideas of the book is that the operation of laws of newsonomics is determining the future development of both traditional and new media. The media community, therefore, would do well to make these laws operate in its favor.
Newsonomics: Twelve Trends That Will Shape the News You Get will be of interest to a broad readership, professional journalists, bloggers and publishers.
The Future Media book series is one of this agency’s projects directed at studying and systematizing the key trends in the development of the media industry. In 2012, RIA Novosti held a number of conferences and seminars to discuss prob-lems standing in the way of media progress. These were the Future Media fo-rum for leading Western and Russian analysts and chief editors, the Bloggers’ Non-Forum for an informal discussion of civic media, as well as roundtables on new metrics for internet media. Aside from that, RIA Novosti is also active in studying the development trends of new media and their audiences on the available platforms: the internet, tablet computers and smartphones.
